The Byzantine Generals Problem is a long-standing question in distributed computing. In the context of blockchain [[Consensus Mechanism|consensus mechanisms]], it especially concerns the potential for dishonesty among network actors. Still, this idea speaks to failures of malfunction _and_ failures by malicious intent. The former type of failure speaks more to fault tolerance in industrial automation, in which a system is able to endure a degree of failure while maintaining its normal operations. The latter type of failure speaks more to a game theoretical and probabilistic approach, as malicious intent must be both systematically and humanistically disincentivized.
